Ricci was the eldest of four children born to Sarah Murdoch and Ralph Ricci in Santa Monica, California. Her mother worked as a Ford Agency model in the 1960s and then became a real-estate agent. She was the daughter of a lawyer, as a counselor for drug addiction, a primal scream therapist, and a gym teacher. Ricci stated she believed that her Italian roots were the result of her surname. A couple of Italians married an Irishwoman about four or five generations back. The couple had their entire children. Children were born and many Irish wives were married. Nowadays, I'm essentially Scots Irish" Ricci's family relocated from Italy in Montclair, New Jersey. She attended Edgemont Elementary School, Glenfield Middle School, Montclair High School, Montclair High School, Morristown-Beard School, as well as Montclair High School. She also attended Professional Children's School, New York City.
